I don't think the shading is all that bad. I'll definately ask around for you though.

One thing I notice though is that it looks like his pants are tucked into his combat boots sometimes, and other times it looks like the pant cover them. That might be something to adress before you get to far along.

oh, the boot issue is cause the colour of the boots is the same as the colour of the pants, hence it looks like that.

and you know what, neither do I, but I keep on hearing that it is, so I need to learn how to fix it.

Its just the crouching, turning sprite. Maybe just frankensprite the boot from the standing position and paste it on the crouch sprite. If it gives you trouble send me the crouch, and 1 stance and I can shpw you an example

you sure that's not the Trench Coat in the crouch, cause it kinda does looklike that.

Hmmn that could be, but if that the case the trenchcoat should show up somewhere between his legs. Right now when he cruches it looks like the coat goes to the side that has the knee on the ground. If the coat is around the leg with the foot on the ground it looks more like a pantleg. You may need to sprite the coat in the between the legs area because a trench wouldnt split like that in a crouch

try this.

Pick a light source (you will need to be able too think of him from a 3d perspective).

Draw imaginary lines from the light source to the subject with the power of your imagination  ;). If the light would hit a spot directly and bounce straight  back it will be bright. If it would refract at an angle it will be slightly darker. If it is blocked from the light it will be dark.

Also study up on the way different materials reflect light. For example, leather will have a wrinkled texture and in the places were it reflects light directly it will be very bright (almost white) while other areas will be darker. On cotton or wool, the tone will be fairly medium all around.
For those who are curious, yes I am gone and I don't intend to be back soon. I never formally said goodbye to you all, because that always becomes a forum stink. However, to my friends here, I wish you the best. Perhaps I'll be back one day but for now this is goodbye.

I'm not sure where your light source is based on that. Could you repost with a dot marking it and denote approx how many pixels forward or backward it would be for 3d effect.

well, it was less my imagination and more me asking my bro to where a coat and basing it off that, I did it just before I read your post, so I'll be trying you way next.

thats not a bad way either but I get the impression that you just based coat off that and not the rest of him cus based on where the light hits the coat, the angle at which it hits the shirt seems odd

almost there but  remember that the coat is a barrier so  the side nearest to the light source will be darker due to the shadow cast by the edge of his coat. also is the light source coming from the back?? if so, most of the front should not look like light is hitting it. if not the light part on the arm should be wider.

better :)

the shirt still looks a bit off. Also you should take into account the the shirt will likely have a cotton texture while trench coats are usually leather.
