For a first timer
« on: December 04, 2009, 09:23:48 AM »
After about 2 months of fixing my computer, it is finally in shape enough to run mugen. I'd like to download it, however the tutorials on Youtube don't really answer my questions about what files or programs i need before installing it. Do I need WinZip or some other program that allows me to run .zip files? What about .rar file? My questions are organized below:

1. Do I need to download a specific program that helps run M.U.G.E.N. efficiently?
2. Do I need to purchase any programs to run .zip and/or .rar files? (Such as WinZip [$30 USD])
3. Are there any other skins for the start up menu that are completed other than EVE and Basic MUGEN?
4. I heard there is a risk to storing .rar and .zip onto your computer, is that true and if so, why?
5. Are there any MUGEN sites that have malicious programming, in other words are there any common mugen websites that have malicious downloads (viruses)?

I would appreciate if I could get some answers, thank you to anyone who comes to my aid by posting.

You dont need anything specific to run it.

All you need to download is Winmugen which only runs low resolution stages and screenpacks. or you can go to Randomselect.com is where I believe I got mine and DL the Winmugen Plus that works with High Resolution Stages and Screenpacks. You'll need this to play some of the newer things that come out.

As far as additional programs:

download K-lite codec pack and install that so that you can play MP3s better on your computer.
Winrar so you can extract .rar and .zip files.
you ned DGCA, and GCA to extract .gca and .lzh files from our foreign friends.
-all of those are free no payments.

There is no risk in storing these files on your computer per say. Its just what people get into. such as downloading a virus and losing all there hard work on their HD. These kinda people dont have virus protect and usually store their mugen files on another external HD.

Its rare for malicious mugen sites. I have AVG Free installed with link scanner on. Dont go to any website that would normal post items your unsure of. Would you rather go to cvg and get the character from the creators website or go to a warehouse like esnips with random stuff and risk a virus?

If you need anything program wise PM LTD and/or me after I finally get my stuff update.
LTD has a character roster update page you can check out.

Winrar and  7zip are the best compression softwares to have and will unzip and unrar all most any file compression format. These are also free.

7zip: http://sourceforge.net/projects/sevenzip/files/7-Zip/4.65/7z465.exe/download

Winrar: http://www.win-rar.com/download.html

Here is a personal version of Mugen I use and a Hi-res version as well.

Mugen / With EVE Screenpack: http://www.adrive.com/public/0758ee21c4faeee3788e3846382be46cf601572bf000f1e34589d7206cb0014a.html

Hi-Res Mugen : http://www.4shared.com/file/124785876/c76e7e3c/MUGEN.html

You might need Fighter Factory and I suggest the older version. Here is a link for that as well.

Fight Factory Update 3: http://www.4shared.com/file/115602059/25f7fc1d/ffupd3-setup.html

If there is anything else you may need just ask and we will all do our best to help you out. :watchmen:
