When does a character become open source to edits?
« on: November 18, 2009, 08:32:48 AM »
Okay, there is a character, who shall remain nameless that was released more than a year ago.

I recently got into a conversation with the author, who has left mugen altogether quite awhile ago, about various things. I brought up interest in updating one of his characters and he cut off all communication. Tried to say something again about it again and no answer.

He did not say no, but it was abundantly clear he's done with all things mugen personally.

So my question is this, since there is no edict to not edit (and so you know, some of his characters have been edited in the past), and he obviously will not ever answer requests to update a character of his, be it today or 3-5 years from now, when does consideration to where can release a public update to such a character begin?

I agree with JT, just do want you want and give proper credit where it's due. On that same subject, you can edit anything you want for yourself, like I do all the time,  :watchmen: it's when you want to release these things is when you have to be careful and place credit where it is due.

Yeah I agree with you guys...do whatever you want with it as long as it's clear what he did and he started the character

Personally, I wouldn't care if people edited my character as long as they credited me. I woundn't really care about permission if i posted it publically.

but what if they never say and refuse to answer when asked? (and you know they saw the question)

plus, other chars that fall into that same catagory have been edited, but no stink made of such.

Let's break it down, this guy left mugen. He cut all contact with everybody, and he never said you couldn't do it (neither did he say you could). First off all, since he said he's leaving mugen, and he put up content for download, what does he expect everybody to do? Leave it alone? If he were really worried about it, i'm sure he would've taken it down. Let us observe the old axiom: 'Silence shows approval.' If you in fact asked him use the sprites and he said nothing, then his silence showed that he was indifferent or he approved. He has no argument to contradict that, he has no right to be angry if you do use them (if he does come back and gets angry). So, really you can use them. Like a man who dies without a will, all his possessions are given to the state (at least it was in antiquity). If you are worried, the least you could do is credit the use of his sprites.
