MUGEN ON THE XBOX TUTORIAL BY:  YOUNGDRAGUN

This is a tutorial for "XMugen". For those who don't know XMugen is a version of Mugen that is playable on the XBOX (Original not 360, yet) gaming console that has been modded by means of soft mod, TSOP mod or by a good ol'modchip. If you do not care to use this nor have a modded XBOX console then stop reading.

Ok first things first, I do not claim to have made this I only claim to know alot about it and modding in general for that matter. I have posted this tutorial and files for sharing and archive purposes. This Is a tutrorial for using the XMugen program and getting it to work on a modded XBOX only, use this tutorial and files at your own risk I take no responsiblity for you not properly installing or using these files. All other questions or inquiries not related to XMugen should be posted in threads other than this one. Absolutely no posting of modding consoles and or how to questions about modding allowed in this thread. If any questions pertaining to how to mod a console are asked I will not reply . If you plan on asking questions about modding stop reading and do not post here. All questions pertaining to modding should be through PM and I will answer those directed at me if I so choose. Thank you for your attention.

======================================================================

Now there are two options for XMugen and many "poisons" (versions) to choose from.

OPTION 1.)

This is for those who have a modded XBOX with a retail hard drive and only an "E" partition/drive (Those of you that have a modded XBOX and know how to use FTP will know what I'm talking about, those who have no idea what I'm talking about are wasting their time to continue reading any further) or those who have no space left on their "F" partition and plenty of space on "E".

OPTION 2.)

This is for those that have an upgraded/larger HD (thats hard drive for those who don't know the abbreviation) and an "F" partition with available space.

POISONS

Types of "poison" vary from versions that are either single screenpack types where you can only play whatever version of screenpack is configured into it to those that have modified, animated UnleashX dash loaders with multiple skins and up to 10 (maybe more) different selectable screenpack versions.

The type I will be refering to and posting will be of the single screenpack type.
======================================================================
DOWNLOADS:

XMugen with "EVE" Screenpack for "F" partion:

http://www.4shared.com/file/83344774/2e2843f/EVE_X-MUGEN.html

This is a drag and drop type upload, just unzip and then FTP to your XBOX HD, just copy over the "Games" if you already have one, nothing but the folder "Games" will be overwritten all files and
folders inside will be untouched.
=======================================================================
XMugen with "EVE" Screenpack for "E" partition:

http://www.adrive.com/public/b5fc2330190d09857a8eef486ee3929330ed6531cf2d2e3ddf8ee3e6faf41730.html

This is the same as stated above however this is for the "E" partition.
=======================================================================
XMugen Renamer 2:

http://www.4shared.com/file/83555450/667a3135/Xmugen_Renamer_2.html

This program is used to rename files and stuff Mugen related to make any character, stage, sound, font, .def file or what have you compatible for XMugen. XMugen is a Linux OS mini distro, basically its not an emulator but rather a reduced to its minimum Linux OS that loads Mugen on the XBOX. Linux is case sensitive so this program converts all required files and such text from capitals to lowercase. This makes XMugen recognize files, folders and such to run properly.
=======================================================================
DIRECTIONS FOR USE:

1. Download either version "E" or "F" partition along with the renamer program.

2. Extract and FTP to designated XBOX partition/drive version and make sure it works first.

You will first get a black screen with some text and you might think to yourself OFMG what have I done. Don't panic this is normal. The first black screen should only stay for like 5 seconds then switch to another black screen with some guys pic in the left hand corner with a Linux discription at the top and say something about Xbox patches and stuff.  it will be loading files and such and it should read somewhere as the text is scrolling down like this " xbox controller found port 1" or something saying it found a controller and if it reads " no usb device found " then your controller will not work with this so either buy a authentic microsoft xbox controller or try different ones to see if one you have will work. Mine works with the big bulky original microsoft XBOX control and an arcade controller by Gamester, I have a pelican which will not work, oh and it works with my MK theme controller too, also make sure you have at least one controller pluged in that has the thumbsticks you'll know why in a bit. If the controller is not detected it will still load but you won't be able to play. Now after its reads that a controller was found it will take a minute or so and you'll hear the HD working. thats because it's loading a 1GB swap file to the HD it should display that on the screen. After that it should load to a screen asking you to press F1 to continue with a screenpack image in the background, this is where the thumbstick comes in. Press down on the right thumbstick to get past this screen, after that you should know what to do from there cause its no different than Mugen except for the fact that its playing on your Xbox.

(Now the version I have uploaded either "E" OF "F" options are only loaded with one character and two stages so that you can see that it works, the rest is up to you to load.)

3. If you tested it and it worked then good turn it off (the Xbox) and the only way to turn it off from XMugen is by powering down the Xbox itself. Hit the power button and go back to the computer.

4. No you will have to load the XMugen with characters and stages. to do this open up the file "data" in the "xmugen"  folder then open the folder "EVE", now copy and paste the select.def to where ever you want so you can modify it. Minimize the window and continue to the next step.

5. Take a character folder and a stage (files) that you want to install to XMugen and copy and paste it somewhere to be modified. Close that but remember where it is or paste it to a new folder on your desktop or on the destop itself.

6. Now if you haven't downloaded the renamer program do so now and open it up. Now see the icon in there with a hammer and a wrench, click that to open it. Now another window will open up, click the little Warmachine head at the top left, its the first button, a window will pop up and this is where you find that character folder you just copied and pasted. Use the drop down directory and highlight the character folder where ever it is or if its on your desktop not in a folder double click on the desktop listing in the drop down and then hit the bottom where it reads "scan for character", now the right side should list all characters that are on the desktop or where ever you put the folder(s) check the box by the chaaracter name that you want to install and hit the "fix characters" button on the bottom, another window will pop up with the name of the character folder but now its in lowercase letters, now  highlight the name and copy it then go to the select.def file and open it up paste that character name in any slot you choose or you can just type it if you don't want to copy and paste just make sure to copy over or erase anything there like "randomselect" or what ever is listed in the slot just make sure its not a "blank" slot. You should know this already from previous Mugen experience.

EXAMPLE:
;Insert your characters below.

-/
-/
-/
-/
-/
-/
-/
-/     <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Not here
-/
-/
-/
-/
kfm    <<<<<<<<< This is where pasted the charater name or typed it.
randomselect <<<<<<<<<<<<< Or you can put it here, just not like the above or one that says blank   <<<<<<<<<<<<<<< And not here either
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect

Now minimize it and go back to the renamer program.

7. This time click the world icon button and another window should pop up. Now do what you did before with the character. Find it, check it , fix it, highlight it and then copy it. now go back to the select.def and paste this where you would list you stages, its usually after where it reads [extrastages].

EXAMPLE: [ExtraStages]
;Put extra stages here. They will be available in VS and Watch modes.
;For example, you can insert "stages/mybg.def".

stages/kfm.def    <<<<<<<<<<< This is where I copied it

( NOTE: If the stage you converted requires a certain sound file (MP3) use the renamer on that as well, copy and paste the MP3 to the same place you are converting all the other files. The icon button  for sound convertion is the one that looks like a speaker, click that and its the same as converting the other files. After converting that sound file make sure to copy it to the "sounds" file in "xmugen".)

Now go back to where you pasted the character and at the end of the name place a comma then paste that stage name after the comma, next type this after the "stage/(your selected stage name).def" another comma and "order = 1" So it should now read like this.

EXAMPLE:
EXAMPLE:
;Insert your characters below.

-/
-/
-/
-/
-/
-/
-/
-/
-/
-/
-/
-/
kfm,stages/kfm,order=1 <<<<< Just like this
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect
randomselect

Good. close this and make sure to save. Now close the renamer program.

( NOTE: If you do not add a stage to the characters name and all characters are like this then you will have a vary short arcade experience or certain characters will never show up. So assigning a stage to the character is important for arcade play. Now the order part is arcade related as well, its needed so that the computer/program knows what order you would like certain character to be selected for you to fight against in arcade mode only. The option for fight order is 1 thru 9 where a character with an order number 2 will be picked by the computer before picking a character with a higher number. Use the lower numbers for regular character and use the higher number for sronger one with improved AI, I use 9 on all boss type character or ones with insanely hard AI. Now there is a number (0) that if placed in a characters name for selection makes that character never picked for arcade for you to fight against but leaves it selectable at the select screen and by randomselect. You would put this number on cheap/joke type characters that you would never want to fight against in arcade unless you had a death wish )

8. Next open the folder where you have the character and stages files/folder and copy the character to the chars folder in the xmugen and copy the stage files to the stages folder in xmugen as well.

9.  Now open the data folder again in the xmugen folder, then open the EVE folder again and find a file called "common1.cns", copy this and paste it into the character folder you just converted. Highlight it, right click copy and right click on the folder without opening it and paste. This is just a precaution so that there will be no monkey business from that character. ( it helps reduce problems and crashes).

Congradulations you just converted and installed your very first character and stage files to XMugen !!!!!

Now close and save everything, double check that every file in the character folder is in lowercase and the same for the stage files as well. Also make sure that the common1.cns file from the EVE folder is in you character folder as well. Now make sure that the select.def file is as you just modified it to.

Now FTP that modified copy to your Xbox and make sure it works. Don't forget to delete the one you tested first. Now if it crashes or does not load then unzip the XMugen folder again and start over or if it starts and all seems fine up to the vs screen then either the character is uncompatible or something was left capitalized. In any case report your findings and crashes here. don't forget to post your type of mod (soft, tsop or modchip)  along with what ever error message pops up on the black screen when tring this. Those of you who have XBMC as a dash may experience problems loading XMugen, if so I would suggest changing to an UnleashX dash as it is more compatible with XMugen.

Well thank you for your attention and hopefully you'll have fun wih this. If this does well here at this forum I will upload more version and maybe take requests. For now lets see how things go.OTAY. Peace.

Great tutorial. This is how I play my mugen and it is awesome to say the least. I have different xmugen versions than the ones you posted though. They're pretty sweet if you or anyone else ever wants them. One version runs like an emulator where you pick a screenpack you want to play out of a list with twelve possible screenpacks, so it's like having 12 different versions of xmugen at once. The other version is pretty much the same but only supports 6 screenpacks. It's good if you want the most possible screepacks on your xbox, and also have it on more than one partition. If you've heard of those versions, you wouldn't happen to know how to change the screepacks for them would you? That's the one thing I can't figure out.

EDIT:

Just to add on to the tutorial. If anyone does this and wonders why it crashes every time you continue, it's because you need to assign each character an actual level in the select.def. If you don't, xmugen will crash, and you'll have to reload it again. Just thought I'd throw that out there because it was really bugging me when I first got into xmugen, and couldn't figure out why it kept crashing.

Thank you for the additional info, I purposely left that out, I thought I had put that info in but I forgot that I had opted to leave it out so that others could post their errors here, in that way people learn how to and understand better. Going through the motions rather than having everything laid out for you is anyways more educational. Besides if I made this tutorial complete to my standards it would go on for three pages. Literally, and who would want to read all that? Anyways thanks for the info posted. I opted also to not use the UnleashX loader version as the version I posted in my experience is the most complete, compatible and simplist way to play Xmugen with less errors.

EDIT:
I have added the info into the tutorial. :)

What screenpacks are you refering to, the one for the different partitions "E" &"F",the UnleashX modified loader or something else? I know how to configure any type of screenpack, you would just have to be more specific and add more info as to what setup you have. The more info you give me the better your chances of me helping you. :)

Well, I know how to add new screenpacks to mugen and versions of xmugen like Risky's. The version of xmugen I use though is the "A Murder of Crows" version which loads with a list of screenpacks to pick from. I just can't figure out how to change the screenpacks for that version because they say you have to add the files like you would normally, then add the screenpack name to the loaders list or something. The directions are horribly written, so if you know how to do it, I would GREATLY appreciate it. If you need me to send you my version too so you can check it out, just let me know. Thanks man.

By the way I understand what you wrote you have a modified UnleashX dash that loads the Xmugen. Yes upload it for me and I will take a look if its the one I think it is then I will be able to help you out, either way I'll be able to help you cause if its something I have never come across i will still fiqure it out and inform you of what you need to do.

I'm sure you knew what I meant, I was just trying to give what details I could offer. If you figured this out for me though, that would be amazingly awesome. Here's the download for you, and good luck. I've been wanting to figure this out forever. Thanks for the help.

Ok I downloaded your pack and it looks like an old guybird pack. You forgot the data folder its empty and i need to see that to help as i do not have the guybird pack any longer. If you can upload the data folder complete that would help me help you.  Oh and let me know what screen pack you are trying to load to it. Peace.

Sorry about that man. I feel like a total idiot now. I guess I should check my files before uploading them next time. I'm reuploading my fixed version for you right now, but it's gonna take me about an hour. I want to replace a couple of the screenpacks in there for other ones. There's one on there right now that came with my version originally that has never loaded, which is the DC vs Marvel one from scruffydragon. If you could get that one to work, that would be awesome. Actually, the CvS2 screenpack on there won't load either if you want to take a look at that one too. I really do appreciate all the help man. I'll have it posted here for you shortly.

For those who are curious, yes I am gone and I don't intend to be back soon. I never formally said goodbye to you all, because that always becomes a forum stink. However, to my friends here, I wish you the best. Perhaps I'll be back one day but for now this is goodbye.

No problem once you upload the file and I download I should have it worked out for you. I have a simular to that one made by stig87 and compiled by sean2500 ways back and I am working to get that working properly it had about 13 or so screenpacks included with no characters and the select.def files were a mess. anyways I'll hook you up with yours when I get your data folder. peace.
